Highlights and Recap: Beyond a Livable Wage Event

Aug 8, 2023

Recently, Alternatives, Women Employed, and Illinois Partners for Human Service collaborated on the “Beyond a Livable Wage: The Right to Thrive” event.

The in-person event included a livable wage simulation, a panel discussion, and a keynote address by Chicago City Treasurer, Melissa Conyears-Ervin. The event brought together elected officials, philanthropy, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders for this important and exciting conversation.

The panel of amazing leaders in the nonprofit sector, higher education sector, and human resources shared their perspectives on the realities that workers and job seekers are facing to enter and stay in the workforce, the systemic barriers that keep workers from thriving, and actions we can take to ensure that all workers in our city and state are paid a thriving wage.

Many thanks to Chicago City Treasurer, Melissa Conyears-Ervin and our panelists: Sharmili Majmudar, Judith Susan Rocha, Ph.D., LCSW (ella/she), LaKeisha Freeman, SHRM-SCP, and Juliana Gonzalez-Crussi for sharing their valuable perspectives and calls to action. Our very own Director of Grassroots Partnerships, Adela Carlin, served as the moderator for the discussion.

A very special thank you to the Alternatives team including Bessie Alcantara, Monica George and Deanna Phillips, for bringing us all together to make this event possible; to the Women Employed team including Tara Driver and Efrata Sasahulih for co-hosting the event; and to Christian Simpson from Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI) for supporting the livable wage simulation part of the event.
