This bill would make Illinois the first state in the nation to implement universal health insurance for low-income residents, regardless of immigration status. The 2023 campaign builds on previous wins establishing a state funded Medicaid-like program for low income adults over the age of 42, regardless of immigration status. This bill would provide coverage to the remaining uninsured adults, age 19 through 41. There are 116,000 low-income uninsured Illinoisans who have no options for healthcare coverage.

Representative Lisa Hernandez and Senator Omar Aquino are chief sponsors for the bill and they were present at the press conference along with other legislative champions Representative Theresa Mah, Senator Karina Villa and Representative Lilian Jimenez. Speakers included Dr. Ngozi Ezike, President and CEO of Sinai Chicago, and community members who would benefit from the expansion of healthcare coverage.

Illinois Partners is a proud member of the steering committee of Healthy Illinois, for affordable healthcare coverage accessible to all people in Illinois. Learn more about the Healthy Illinois for All campaign and how you can support it.
