A WBEZ investigation found the state of Illinois is failing to ensure that thousands of children are getting the intensive mental health support they need through a state program called SASS (Screening, Assessment and Support Services). The investigation included interviews with frontline providers of mental health services. “It’s severely underfunded, it’s under-resourced”, said Jessica Boland, Director of Behavioral Health at Esperanza Health Centers.
